An unhealthy body Ph condition is acidic which is caused by the manufacture and accumulation of acid from the products of digestion in amounts greater than the body can eliminate.

Dr. William Howard Hay created his idea of food combining in 1911. The basic idea is that there is one underlying cause for the majority of health problems and that is the wrong Ph condition in the body.

An acid condition results in the lowering of the body's vital alkaline reserve, the depletion of which causes toxaemia.

Dr. Hay placed foods into three catagories according to their chemical needs for effective digestion. The three types are:

Dr. Hay's theory was that, although protein and starch foods are acid forming in their end products in the body, they need different conditions for digestion and should never be combined at the same meal.
